The Western Illinois baseball team faced a challenging game against the University of Illinois, resulting in a 12-1 defeat on Tuesday night. This loss brings WIU's overall season record to 8-28.
Western Illinois struggled offensively, managing only four hits throughout the game. On the defensive side, senior Kyle Rosenfeld made notable contributions with a strikeout in the first inning and initiating a double play in the second inning, keeping the early innings scoreless. However, Illinois took an early lead with a solo home run in the third inning.
Cesar Franco continued his streak of extra-base hits with a double at the start of WIU's second inning but was unable to advance beyond second base. The fifth inning saw Illinois extend their lead significantly by scoring seven runs, making it 8-0. They further increased their advantage with four more runs in the sixth inning.
WIU managed to score once during their final at-bats. Trevor Leon hit a single, followed by Brock Lummus reaching base due to an error by Illinois' second baseman. Justin Jang was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for WIU. Max Slavens then drove in their only run with a ground out to first base.
The combined efforts of Adam Juran, Cesar Franco, Trevor Leon, and Brock Lummus accounted for Western Illinois' four hits. Franco's double was the sole extra-base hit for WIU. The pitching staff collectively struck out seven players from Illinois; Rosenfeld contributed two strikeouts initially and was supported by Jackson Rodgers and Kyle Anderson each adding one more, while Cole Dale also added two.
Western Illinois is set to return to action this weekend as they travel to Lindenwood for an important OVC series.
