A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Barry City Council in Illinois on October 15, 2024. The request was made by us at West Central Reporter, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
In our quest for transparency and accountability, we requested specific records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140. We asked for these records preferably in an electronic format for ease of dissemination.
The requested information includes a list of all council members with their respective names, titles, years of appointment, term lengths (2 or 4 years), and term expiry dates.
As a media organization, we believe access to public records is essential for fulfilling our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information, we consider ourselves eligible for a fee waiver as media professionals.
We continue to await a response from the Barry City Council regarding this request.
