A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the City of Hamilton regarding unpaid parking violations on October 28, 2024. The request was made by us at West Central Reporter, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
In our pursuit of transparency and accountability in public institutions, we requested specific records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140. The records sought include a list of all parking violations currently unpaid within the city's jurisdiction. This list is expected to detail the name of the offender, their address, the amount due for each violation, the date of each violation, and the total amount due.
As members of the media involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, access to such public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. We believe that our role in disseminating information qualifies us for a fee waiver as media professionals.
We await a positive response from the City of Hamilton as we continue our work in promoting transparency and holding public institutions accountable.
