The Western Illinois University (WIU) men's soccer team concluded their season with a 2-1 defeat against Lindenwood in the quarterfinals of the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Tournament. The match, held on Sunday afternoon, saw an early start to the action as Lindenwood took the lead in the 11th minute due to an own goal by WIU. Throughout the first half, Lindenwood outshot WIU 7-2, with WIU's goalkeeper Micah Ramirez making three saves.
In the second half, WIU increased their offensive efforts and equalized in the 57th minute when Liam Gainey scored with assistance from Ty Duax. However, Lindenwood regained their advantage in the 70th minute, securing a 2-1 victory despite WIU outshooting them 6-5 in the latter half.
The game was intense, with several players receiving yellow cards. Ethan Blake, Josh Francombe, and Christos Philippou from Lindenwood were cautioned, along with Joel McIntyre, Diego Porras, and Xavier Gagnon from WIU.
This season marked WIU's first as part of the Ohio Valley Conference. They ended with an overall record of 8-11-1 and a conference record of 3-7. Their eight wins this season matched their highest since finishing 8-10-1 in 2016.
