Two officers from the Macomb Police Department, Nick Severs and J.P. McLaughlin, have been recognized with Valor Awards by the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) following injuries sustained during a recent incident in Macomb. The awards were presented on November 9.
“These officers always knew that the day might come when they would have to put their lives on the line, but they didn’t hesitate to face danger as they tried to keep Macomb residents safe,” stated Chris Southwood, President of the Illinois FOP State Lodge. He expressed relief at their recovery and noted that "the suspect was arrested."
Illinois State Representative Norine Hammond also participated in presenting the awards. She praised the officers as "heroes who courageously took action" and emphasized her gratitude for law enforcement's role in ensuring public safety.
The incident occurred on September 4, 2024, when Officers Severs and McLaughlin attempted to execute a search warrant at a residence in Macomb. Upon forced entry after announcing their presence, both were shot by an individual inside. Following several hours of standoff negotiations, the suspect surrendered.
The Fraternal Order of Police is noted as the largest organization representing sworn law enforcement officers in the United States since its founding in 1915. The Illinois FOP represents over 34,000 active duty and retired police officers within its ranks.
