The Western Illinois University (WIU) tennis team secured a victory in St. Louis, defeating their opponents with an overall score of 4-2.
In the doubles matches, WIU started strong by winning two out of three contests. The duo of Nour Gueblaoui and Chloé Routier won at the No. 1 spot with a score of 6-2. Meanwhile, Paige Grice and Mana Fawcett triumphed quickly at No. 2 with a similar scoreline, giving WIU an early lead of 1-0. Lara Souza and Richardlyne Francois did not complete their match due to clinching.
During singles play, Francois was first to finish, achieving a straightforward win at No. 5 with scores of 6-2 and 6-0. Fawcett followed suit with a victory at No. 4, winning her match 6-1, 7-5. Souza faced defeat at No. 2, losing both sets by identical scores of 2-6. Routier engaged in a three-set battle but ultimately lost after taking the first set; her final scores were 6-4, 2-6, and 0-6. Grice clinched the overall victory for WIU by winning her match in three sets: she closed it out with scores of 6-3, 4-6, and finally securing it with a decisive third set win of 6-1. Gueblaoui's match extended to three sets but ended in a narrow loss.
The WIU Tennis team is scheduled to travel to Columbia on Saturday, February 22nd for their next match against the Mizzou Tigers.
