Western Illinois University secured a decisive victory against Illinois State, marking their first home win of the 2025 season. The game, held at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium in Macomb, saw the Leathernecks achieve a commanding 17-8 triumph over their opponents.
The Leathernecks began strongly with three runs in the first inning. Paul Osting initiated the scoring with a single, followed by hits from Liam Bushey and Tyler Large. Kenneth Perez contributed significantly with a two-run single to left field, giving WIU an early lead.
Tyler Large extended WIU's advantage in the third inning with a solo home run. Although Illinois State narrowed the gap to 4-3 by the seventh inning, WIU responded robustly with a five-run rally. Kyree Alexander's double and Brock Lummus reaching on an error set up Wandel Campana for an RBI sac fly. A three-run homer by Liam Bushey further increased WIU's lead, followed by another home run from Tyler Large.
Illinois State managed to cut WIU's lead to one in the eighth inning, but WIU countered with an eight-run response in their half of the inning. Kyree Alexander and Brock Lummus were instrumental during this period, each contributing multiple doubles and RBIs.
WIU capitalized on opportunities throughout the game, ending with five doubles, one triple, and three home runs among their 19 hits.
This victory improves Western Illinois' record to 5-9 for the season. They aim to continue this momentum as they head to Bloomington for a doubleheader against Illinois State.
