City of Dallas City Council met June 2.

Here is the agenda provided by the council:

The Dallas City City Council held its regular meeting on June 2, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. Mayor Kevin Six called the meeting to order with the following commissioners present: Carole McDowell, Peggy Newberry, Harold Northup Jr., and Greg Olson.

Others attending the meeting were Anne Thompson, Ruth Higgins, Had Gracey, Dave Johnson, and Gary Smith.

A motion was made by McDowell, and 2nd by Olson to accept the minutes of the May 19, 2025, meeting. McDowell, Newberry, Northup, Olson, and Six AYE.

Ruth Higgins, Had Gracey, and Dave Johnson appeared on behalf of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. With the church being closed at the end of the month, they are going to be selling the Father Schramm Hall, and they were wondering if the city would have any interest in purchasing it. The council indicated to them that the city is very interested in this property. Some of the members of the council would like to take a look at the building. They have no problem doing this. It was decided by the council to contact Brenda Young to get a professional opinion on the value of this property. The city will then draw up a written proposal for the church.

Ms. Higgins also reported that the church's final mass is going to be on June 27, 2025, at 3 p.m. They are expecting a large crowd, and she requested that West Fifth Street from Oak Street to Cedar Street be closed to traffic from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on June 27, 2025. The council agreed to do this.

Police Chief Gary Smith reported that he has completed the TASER 10 Instructor Training and that he will be working on getting Officer Foster certified. There recently was a child in town that got bitten by a dog that had not been vaccinated for rabies. The city had to have the dog placed in observation. The cost for this was $438. The city will try to get the court to order re-imbursement of this by the owner. The dog owner was issued 2 Ordinance Citations with a Notice to Appear in court. Chief Smith also reported that 10 of the 20 nuisance ordinance notices that were issued have been taken care of. He will be issuing a Final Notice to the remaining 10 this week.

Commissioner Newberry reported that the annual John Shoemate Kids Fishing Tournament will be held Saturday, June 7.

The new batwing mower is scheduled to be delivered this week.

A gentleman has contacted Mayor Six and told him that he has purchased the property at 305 Oak Street and that he intends to restore it.

Mayor Six recently met with representatives from Verizon regarding the putting up of a tower on the city's property west of the boat dock parking lot. They indicated to him that they are very interested in putting their tower on this property.

Discussed the Hancock County Economic Development dues of $1,332.45 that are due. A motion was made by Northup, and 2nd by Olson to pay the Hancock County Economic Development dues of $1,332.45. McDowell, Newberry, Northup, Olson, and Six AYE.

A motion was made by Northup, and 2nd by McDowell to adjourn the meeting. McDowell, Newberry, Northup, Olson, and Six AYE.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:24 p.m.
