Western Illinois University Leathernecks men’s soccer team began its 2025 season with a 1-0 win over Butler in Indianapolis. The only goal of the match came in the 21st minute when Benjamin Graham scored with a left-footed shot to the bottom left corner, assisted by Xavier Gagnon.
Goalkeeper Micah Ramirez played a key role for Western Illinois, stopping an early attempt from Butler in the eighth minute and another effort in the 19th minute. Despite Butler’s pressure during the first half, Western Illinois maintained their lead into halftime.
In the second half, Butler continued to create chances but could not score. Ramirez made another save in the 52nd minute, and Western Illinois defended consecutive corners at 52:04 and 53:02.
“Every time the Bulldogs threatened, there was an answer by the Leathernecks,” according to a statement from Western Illinois.
The team will next face Quincy as they look to build on their opening win and aim for a 2-0 start to their season.
