Western Illinois University's men's soccer team was defeated 5-3 by UIC on Thursday night in Chicago. The Leathernecks managed to produce one of their most active offensive performances this season, recording 15 shots with six on target.
UIC established a 2-0 lead within the first 20 minutes of play. Western Illinois responded when Liam Gainey converted a penalty kick in the 28th minute, reducing the deficit to one goal before halftime.
In the second half, UIC scored three consecutive goals, increasing their advantage. The Leathernecks continued to press forward, with Gainey scoring again in the 76th minute after receiving assists from Leevi Swearengen and Ty Duax. Fernando Adrados Castro followed less than ten minutes later with his first goal of the season, assisted by Oscar Olingdahl, bringing the final score to 5-3.
Goalkeeper Micah Ramirez made three saves during the match. Gainey led Western Illinois' attack with two goals from six shots.
The loss moves Western Illinois to a season record of 2-5. The team is scheduled to return home and face IU Indy on Tuesday.
