Western Illinois University Leathernecks women's soccer team is set to host Eastern Illinois before traveling to face Tennessee Tech in upcoming matches. The Leathernecks will play Eastern Illinois in Macomb, Illinois on September 25 at 4:30 p.m., followed by a game against Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tennessee on September 28 at 1:00 p.m.
After their first eleven games of the season, the Leathernecks hold a record of one win and ten losses. Their sole victory came with a 2–0 result over St. Ambrose. The team has since experienced ten consecutive defeats, including a recent close match against Morehead State.
Freshman goalkeeper Lillian Johns has recently assumed the starting role for Western Illinois. Saturday’s game will mark her third collegiate start. "Her presence provides stability for a young WIU back line, and her ability to organize the defense will be a key factor as the Leathernecks head deeper into Big South–OVC play," according to the team.
On offense, freshman Abigail Schilling has emerged as one of the team's leading scorers with two goals this season, tying her with Kayla Turner for most goals on the squad.
Eastern Illinois enters Thursday's match with an overall record of four wins, four losses, and two draws. They are undefeated in Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) play so far this season. "The Panthers like to control the pace through midfield possession and aren't afraid to probe patiently for openings. Their defense has maintained a compact shape, making it tough for opponents to break in centrally," according to Western Illinois' scouting report.
Tennessee Tech currently holds no wins, six losses, and five draws this season but remains competitive through set pieces and high-pressure situations.
