Western Illinois University's women's volleyball team secured a 3–1 victory over UT Martin on Thursday night at Skyhawk Fieldhouse. This win marks the team's second Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) victory of the season.
In the opening set, Western Illinois took an early lead with strong performances from outside hitter Keyana Cruse and right side senior Elizabeth Ziegler. The team maintained momentum through effective serving and defense, finishing the set 25–21 with a kill from Cruse.
The second set saw UT Martin even the match despite several key plays by Cruse and Ashlee Markert. The Skyhawks managed to close out the set 25–21.
Western Illinois responded in the third set with their most efficient offensive effort of the night, achieving a .324 hitting percentage as a team. Cruse led the attack, while Markert, Ziegler, and junior middle blocker Hillary Estes contributed at the net. Setter Madelyn Norton helped balance the offense, leading to a 25–18 win for WIU.
The Leathernecks continued their strong play into the fourth set. Ziegler and Cruse continued to score, and Grace Ulatowski provided solid defense in the back row. Western Illinois controlled play throughout and secured a 25–19 win to take the match.
The teams will meet again tomorrow at 4 p.m.
