The Western Illinois University men's soccer team was defeated 1–0 by Houston Christian University on Sunday at Sorrels Field. The only goal of the match came in the 57th minute, when Houston Christian senior midfielder D'Alessandro Herrera scored after a rebound. This result marks the Leathernecks' second conference loss of the season.
During the first half, both teams created chances but were unable to score. Western Illinois senior forward Joel McIntyre had early opportunities, while senior goalkeeper Micah Ramirez made several saves to keep the game level at halftime.
Houston Christian took the lead after Ricardo Garcia's shot was initially saved by Ramirez, but Herrera converted on the rebound. Western Illinois responded with offensive pressure in the latter part of the match, matching Houston Christian with six shots each in the second half and earning several corner kicks. Ramirez recorded three saves over 12 total shots faced, and Western Illinois also produced 12 shots, with McIntyre and junior forward Xavier Gagnon combining for five.
With this loss, Western Illinois moves to a record of 3-9-2 overall and 1-2-2 in Ohio Valley Conference play. Houston Christian improves to 8-3-1 overall and remains among the leaders in conference standings.
