The price of local government: City of Salem

The City of Salem budget was $18.98 million for its 2015 fiscal year, or $6,161.65 per household.

That's an increase of 4.1 percent from 2014, when the city spent $18.24 million, or $5,920.78 per household.

Salem has 3,080 households and a population of 7,485.

Since 2001, the City of Salem budget has fallen by 11.3 percent, from $21.39 million. The city population has fallen four percent over the same period, from 7,800.

Salaries accounted for 19.8 percent of city spending in 2015. Salem property taxpayers paid $3.76 million for 66 full-time employees and 58 part-time employees.

In 2001, the city had 85 full-time employees and 20 part-time employees, and spent $3.81 million.
