Illinois Governor JB Pritzker addressed the possibility of mid-decade redistricting on Tuesday, commenting on actions by Texas and other Republican states. Gov. Pritzker remarked, “We have to see what they decide to do about Texas… I think we ought to play by the rules,” but also mentioned that a "counterbalance" might be necessary. He further stated, “I think cheating the way the president wants to is improper. We all ought to stand up against it. People ought to be outraged.”
Assistant Republican Leader C.D. Davidsmeyer (R-Murrayville) criticized Gov. Pritzker for his stance on redistricting and accused him of inconsistency regarding fair maps. Davidsmeyer expressed, “What people ought to be outraged about is JB Pritzker’s flip flop on fair maps.” He pointed out that while campaigning for governor, Pritzker supported an independent map and promised to veto any map drawn by politicians. However, as governor, he signed a Democrat-drawn map which Davidsmeyer described as one of the worst examples of gerrymandering in the country.
Davidsmeyer further criticized Pritzker's actions: “JB Pritzker broke his promise to Illinois families, all to further empower corrupt Democrat party bosses like the now-convicted, ex-Speaker Mike Madigan." He accused Governor Pritzker of prioritizing political gains in Washington D.C., over addressing corruption in Illinois.
