Salem FPD responds to 54 fires in 2016

Salem Fire Protection District responded to 90 calls in 2016, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System obtained by the West Central Reporter.

The calls in Salem included 54 fires - 24 structure fires, 10 vehicle fires and 19 other fires. The fire department also responded to one call for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $284,775 in fire loss - or about $5,274 per fire.

The department also received 36 false calls.

The calls resulted in one civilian fire-related death.

The Salem FPD Firefighters' Pension Fund, which has four active employees and five retired or inactive employees, was $63,614 in debt as of April 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $1,178 for every fire in 2016.
