The calls in Salem included 54 fires - 24 structure fires, 10 vehicle fires and 19 other fires. The fire department also responded to one call for ruptures, explosions or overheating.
In all, the department saw $284,775 in fire loss - or about $5,274 per fire.
The department also received 36 false calls.
The calls resulted in one civilian fire-related death.
The Salem FPD Firefighters' Pension Fund, which has four active employees and five retired or inactive employees, was $63,614 in debt as of April 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $1,178 for every fire in 2016.
