School stock 01

Winchester Community Unit School District 1 issued the following announcement on Aug. 1.

We have 12 new employees from this time last year with 7 new this school year, 4 who were hired during the FY18 school year, and 1 returnee.  New staff include: Kalli Fuhler - JH Special Education, Megan Hurrelbrink - 1st Grade, Krista Kunz - HS Business, Dakota Beavers - HS Counselor, Cory Suhre - Bus Driver, John Peters - Part-time Custodian, and Jackie Blanton - Part-time Cook.  Staff that were hired during the 2018-19 school year include: Jacob Schumacher - Vocal Music, Krysta Coon - Nurse, Melissa Moore - 1on1 Health Aide, and Melinda Waid - WGS Custodian. Norvin Adams is back as technology coordinator and will also drive a bus for the district.

Our FY18 District Audit was completed July 25th/26th by Valerie Flynn and her team from Zumbahlen & Associates.  Valerie will be at our September Board Meeting with her annual financial report.

The resurfacing of the playground is done and looks great.  Weder Construction is pouring a giant slab of concrete this week that will connect the playground to the existing blacktop.

The locker trim has been completed and the newly tiled hallway is in the process of being waxed at WGS.  The cafeteria was retiled and waxed earlier in July. The girls restroom had four spacers strips placed on the walls where cracks have formed.

The bleachers are now completely installed.  Electrical and some cosmetic work still needs to be done.  Many trees around campus have been trimmed and some removed.

The WGS gym floor has been screened and waxed by Kiefer USA.  No repainting was done as Kiefer wants to see the wood floor cure another year first.  Area Distributors cleaned and waxed the WHS gym and auditorium stage.

The LED lighting project at WHS is set to get underway in the next couple days and should take about a week to finish.  Contemporary Energy Solutions is the contractor. New carpet has been installed in the WHS Library and in Room 1 on the 2nd floor.

The building permit application for the greenhouse has been sent to ROE #1 for approval.  We don’t have a start date yet but hope to know something soon. The WHS Gym windows are yet to be fixed and a wall in the WHS Teacher’s Lounge still needs to be installed.

The following motions were approved at the July 17th Special School Board Meeting:

  1. Dakota Beavers as WHS Counselor
  2. Kandice Kunkel as JH Softball Coach and Dani Starks as WC Assistant Volleyball Coach
  3. Jackie Blanton as part-time cook
  4. Conduct the superintendent search on own (not using a search firm)
