Brown County Community Unit School District 1 students suspended 150 times in a single school year

Brown County Community Unit School District 1 reported 150 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 150 students during the year. That equates to 20.2 percent of the 744 students enrolled.

Of the 140 in-school suspensions, 116 were given to boys and 24 were given to girls, including 42 elementary or middle schoolers and 98 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 132 incidents. There were four incidents of violence that caused physical injury. For 127 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 10 out-of-school suspensions, all were given to boys.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes eight incidents. There were one incidents of violence that caused physical injury. For six incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
