The state's attorney general urges Illinois citizens to be vigilant and watch for scammers who are trying to con people out of their COVID-19 federal economic stimulus payments.

On March 27, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act was signed into law. Since then, the law has been touted as the largest budgetary aid package in the history of the nation. The law ensures that $2.2 trillion will be designated to individuals and businesses hit by the COVID-19 crisis.

Attorney General Kwame Raou says scammers will try to steal money and information from hardworking citizens.

“We know without a doubt that scammers will try to steal money and information from hardworking Illinoisans who are suffering under the COVID-19 pandemic,” Raoul told the McDonough County Voice. “As much as it disappoints me that there is a need to continue warning people of scams being perpetrated by individuals trying to take advantage of the crisis, I want our residents to know the hallmarks of a scam so that they can avoid them.”
