Hanson Field | Western Illinois University Leathernecks
Western Illinois University’s football team will host Valparaiso for its home opener at Hanson Field in Macomb, Illinois, on Saturday, September 13. The Leathernecks are seeking their first win of the season after starting 0-2 with two road losses against Big Ten opponents.
Last week, Western Illinois fell to Northwestern with a score of 42-7. Quarterback Cason Carswell entered the game as a backup and threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Christian Anaya in the fourth quarter. Carswell completed six of eight passes for 52 yards and one touchdown.
Running back Markell Holman led the ground attack with 36 yards on 11 carries. Demari Davis was the top receiver for Western Illinois, catching three passes for 46 yards, including a long reception of 26 yards.
On defense, Justin Richardson recorded 11 tackles, including six solo stops, one tackle for loss, and forced and recovered a fumble. Christian Pierce and Malini Ti'a each made ten tackles. Buju Aumua-Tuisavura contributed nine tackles while Kevin Washington Jr. added eight tackles and two tackles for loss. Esteban Guillory and Chikala Warden Jr. each broke up a pass.
Special teams have remained consistent behind kicker Antonio Chadha, who has converted all extra point attempts this season.
Valparaiso comes into the matchup with a record of 1-1 after winning its season opener but losing its second game. The Beacons have scored a total of 74 points over their first two games. Western Illinois’ defensive line is expected to play an important role in containing Valparaiso’s offense.
A win in the home opener would give Western Illinois momentum as it moves toward conference play. Saturday’s game also marks Senior Night at Hanson Field.
"Justin Richardson set the tone defensively with 11 tackles, a forced fumble, and a recovery."
"Christian Pierce continues to be a steady presence in the defensive unit, matching Ti'a with 10 tackles."
"Demari Davis continues to pace the receiving group with timely catches and explosive plays."
"Special teams remain steady behind Antonio Chadha, who is perfect on extra points this season and provides range in the kicking game."
