Republican members of the Illinois House of Representatives are again calling for the resignation of Democratic Speaker of the House Michael Madigan (D-Dist. 22) amid new details about his federal investigation.
Republican lawmakers began calling for Madigan’s resignation in December, when he was first tied to a federal investigation into Commonwealth Edison, a release issued on state Rep. Margo McDermed's (R-Dist. 37) website said. McDermed was joined by Rep. Mark Batinick (R-Dist. 97), Rep. Randy Frese (R-Dist. 94) and Rep. Tom Morrison (R-Dist. 54) in the latest call for the Speaker to step down.
While Democrats, including Gov. J.B. Pritzer, have gone on record stating that they believe Madigan should resign if allegations are proven true, McDermed and her colleagues have said that is not enough.
“Madigan has created this culture of corruption serving as the leader he has for decades,” Batinick said in the release. “It is not an ‘if’ he is guilty—this investigation is because of his leadership and the tone he set in his administration. This absolutely happened under his watch and he needs to resign regardless of if or when federal charges are brought against him.”
