Brown County Community Unit School District 1 Board met May 16.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The regular meeting of the Brown County Board of Education was held at 6:00 p.m. in the Brown County Middle School library. The meeting was called to order by Heath Fullerton. The minutes were recorded by McKenzie Taute.

Roll Call: Fullerton, yea; Blaesing, 6:27 p.m.; Blakeley, yea; Hughes, yea; Eichelberger, yea; Koch; absent; Boylen, yea.

Attendance: Lan Eberle, Pollee Craven, Alex Ebbing, Sally Ruble, Kris Gallaher, McKenzie Taute, Rachel Moorman, Danny Moorman, Taryn Moorman, Hope Moorman, Sarah Henry, Darren Henry, Ella Henry, Alaina Henry, Andrew Wagner, Adrian Atterberg, Dave Phelps.

Public Comment: None

Visitors:

Mr. Ebbing introduced Brown County Middle School student of the month, Ella Henry. Ebbing said Henry was nominated for her hard work in the classroom and helpful, pleasant attitude.

Mrs. Craven introduced Brown County High School April student of the month, Taryn Moorman. Craven said Moorman was nominated for her positive attitude and her hard work both in the classroom and on the field.

Correspondence:

Fullerton thanked Brown County State Bank for their monthly affinity card donation in the amount of $567.55.

Fullerton also recognized Martha Blakeley and David Phelps on recently being named the IBCA District 16 girls basketball coaches of the year.

Discussion Items:

Risk Management Plan: Eberle mentioned that the district will be working on updating its risk management plan for approval at an upcoming meeting. Eberle went on to say that the risk management plan determines the amount of money the district needs to levy for the Tort fund.

STEM: Eberle discussed recent meetings with Dot Charitables, Suzanne Parn, Rob Ackright, Luke Bealor, and John Sutor about implementing a STEM lab within the school district. Middle school principal, Alex Ebbing, mentioned the possibility of beginning an after-school STEM Club next school year. Ebbing went on to say that he has been collaborating with the middle school science teachers to determine what that program might look like.

Additional IDEA Grant: Eberle explained that he recently discovered an available IDEA Grant from the State. Eberle went on to say that the grant has an available $43,000 and he wrote for the grant early last week and is awaiting approval. Eberle also mentioned that the grant would have proportionate share with 10% being allotted to St. Mary’s.

Annual Summer Kick-off BBQ: Eberle invited the board to attend the annual Summer Kick-off BBQ for staff that will take place on the last teacher attendance day.

Playground Update: Eberle explained that the plans for the middle school playground are moving right along. Eberle said the project has a tentative install date of June 24, hoping for the project to be completed that weekend using a community build.

Summer School Update: Eberle said 23 of the 90 elementary school students invited have expressed interest in the Summer Hornet Camp. 12 of the 40-50 middle school students have shown interest in the Summer Learning Academy. Eberle said the district will begin offering the program to all students K-8, as the program was originally offered to students who needed extra help.

Auditorium Lighting and Sound: Eberle explained that there is a need for someone trained on the light and sound system to be available when the auditorium is rented. Eberle went on to say that the district is looking at potentially offering a stipend to a staff member to assist with these events.

Fullerton announced that the Fiscal Year 2022 amended budget hearing would take place at 5:45 on June 20,2022.

The board discussed the need to remove at least two of the three trees on the middle school/high school campus due to their deteriorating condition. Building and Grounds committee member, John Eichelberger, said he thought the third tree could potentially be trimmed and saved. The board agreed to have the tree service evaluate the third tree and take their recommendations on its condition.

Motion by Eichelberger, seconded by Blakeley, to approve the proposal from Van Fleet’s Tree Service.

Eberle discussed the recent roof bid received for the middle school/high school campus. Eberle said eight companies took out spec sheets but only one company submitted a bid. The bid submitted was $3.8 million dollars, leaving a gap of nearly $2 million dollars from what the insurance had estimated the replacement cost to be. Eberle asked the board to table the bid approval until the district has time to get with the insurance company to work out the discrepancy. 

Motion by Eichelberger, seconded by Fullerton, to approve the FFA overnight trip to the state convention in Springfield June 13-16 and the national convention in Indianapolis October 25-29.

Fullerton discussed the first reading of Press Plus Issue 109. Fullerton went on to say that the second reading and action would take place at the June 20, 2022, meeting.

Motion by Boylen, seconded by Fullerton, to enter closed session for items a) the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the School District; b) collective negotiating matters between the School District and its employees or their representatives, or deliberations concerning salary schedules for one or more classes of employees at 6:23 p.m.
