Western Illinois Falls to Illinois State
Sep 8, 2024
MACOMB, Ill. - The Western Illinois Women's Soccer team sought to recover from a recent defeat against Green Bay on Thursday. The Leathernecks faced the Redbirds of Illinois State on Sunday afternoon, concluding a three-game homestand at John MacKenzie Alumni Field. The Redbirds secured an early lead and maintained it until the end of the match.
The Redbirds had a promising opportunity in the eighth minute when a shot hit the post before being cleared for a corner by a Western player. On the subsequent set piece, ISU scored to take a one-to-nothing lead. They continued to apply pressure with three consecutive shots, all saved by Ariel Bernard, while the Leathernecks did not record another shot until after halftime.
Early in the second half, ISU earned three consecutive corners, but Western's defense prevented any goals. Overall, Illinois State dominated in corner kicks with ten compared to Western's three.
Illinois State had two more shots hit the woodwork in the 76th and 81st minutes; however, no further goals were scored. The single goal conceded is the fewest allowed by Western Illinois so far this season.
Western Illinois will continue their non-conference schedule next week with matches on September 13 at St. Thomas and September 15 at Drake.
