The Western Illinois University men's and women's cross country teams are set to begin their 2022 season with the Early Bird Meet at Spring Lake Park in Macomb. The women's race is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's race.

Coach Trey Brokaw expressed optimism about the upcoming season, noting significant work put in by returning athletes over the summer. "We're pretty excited to see all the work the returners put in over the summer," Brokaw said. He emphasized that many runners have improved their aerobic capacity through extensive training.

Key figures for the men's team include Olin Ortiz and Logan Lommel, both recognized as Summit League Preseason Athletes to Watch. Brokaw praised them not only for their athletic abilities but also for setting a positive example off the course. "They lead by example, they're really good guys too," he stated.

On the women's side, Maleigha Huston was similarly acknowledged as a Summit League Preseason Athlete to Watch. Brokaw is also encouraged by new additions to both teams, including freshman Aylana Cezar from Brazil, who has been named a Preseason Summit Athlete to Watch due to her impressive credentials.

"Aylana is a really talented runner from Brazil," Brokaw noted, highlighting her achievements as a four-time Brazilian National Champion and South American silver medalist in cross country.

Other promising newcomers include Kayden Gilmore on the women's team and Jace Green, Noah Stout, Robert Perry, and Caleb Ware on the men's team. Brokaw anticipates these fresh faces will make significant contributions this season.

Looking ahead to Friday's meet and beyond, Brokaw aims to prepare his athletes for a long year that includes cross country as well as indoor and outdoor track seasons. "It's early in the season for the student-athletes... it's our first competition so it's about getting the rust busted off," he explained.
