In a tribute to the late Michele Touvelle, a former Western Illinois University Volleyball player, her wife Marilyn Cichowski has established a $30,000 scholarship endowment in her name. This endowment aims to honor Touvelle's impact on the WIU Volleyball program and provide ongoing support to future student-athletes.
"I know Michele valued her education and ability to play varsity Volleyball at WIU," said Cichowski. "Being able to give back to other deserving volleyball student-athletes is a fitting tribute to her. It gives me great pleasure to endow the scholarship. I hope it inspires others to follow suit."
Touvelle played for the Leathernecks from 1982 to 1986 and was recognized with Conference First Team honors in 1985. She led the team in kills and digs during her tenure and remains in the record books for several achievements.
"Marilyn's generous gift honoring her late wife, Dr. Michele Touvelle, is a gesture unlike any other I have been a part of in my career," stated Head Volleyball Coach Dale Starr. "To endow a scholarship that will permanently benefit Leatherneck volleyball student-athletes is something really special."
Touvelle earned her degree in Chemistry from Western Illinois University before obtaining her doctorate from Northwestern University and becoming an accomplished chemist.
The scholarship, named the Michele Touvelle Competitive Excellence Scholarship, is the first endowed scholarship for the volleyball program at Western Illinois University. It will provide perpetual support for a volleyball student-athlete, aiding them in their academic and athletic pursuits.
"We are so grateful to Marilyn for her generosity and desire to honor Dr. Touvelle's legacy at WIU," expressed Dr. Tayler Onion, Assistant Athletic Director of Development. "This is the first endowed scholarship specifically dedicated to volleyball student-athletes at Western."
WIU Athletics and Leatherneck Volleyball extended their gratitude to Marilyn Cichowski for preserving Touvelle's legacy and supporting future athletes.
