Western Illinois University has announced the appointment of Alex Becerra as the new assistant coach for its volleyball team, the Leathernecks. The announcement was made by head coach Dale Starr.
"We are excited for Alex to join our staff. She is very eager and driven, and will be a great addition to our program," Starr stated. "She has great energy and I look forward to her becoming an integral part of our success as we work towards Ohio Valley Conference championships."
Becerra arrives at Western Illinois after serving three seasons as an assistant coach at Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio. Her responsibilities there included managing play cards during matches and collecting statistics on opposing teams. Additionally, she played a significant role in recruiting by organizing trips and campus visits for potential recruits.
Her coaching career began with the Carolina Juniors Volleyball Club, where she led multiple high school and middle school teams. In 2021, she joined Eastside Volleyball Club as head coach for their American 15.4 and National 13.1 teams.
Becerra's playing career started at Queens University of Charlotte, where she appeared in 18 matches with 11 starts, ranking second on the team with 378 assists. She later transferred to Lake Erie College in 2019, participating in all 30 matches and recording 639 assists.
