Western Illinois University secured a significant victory in volleyball against Tennessee State, achieving their first sweep of the season with a 3-0 win at Western Hall on Friday. This victory advances Western Illinois to a 7-8 record in Ohio Valley Conference play.
In the first set, Western Illinois initially trailed 10-6 but managed to regain control through strategic plays. Key players like Grace Kremer, Brittany Wulf, and Julianna Schmidt contributed crucial kills that helped the Leathernecks secure the set with a final score of 25-20.
The second set began with both teams closely matched, but WIU broke away from an 8-8 tie thanks to back-to-back kills by Annika Black and Keyana Cruse. Despite Tennessee State's efforts to close the gap, WIU maintained their lead and concluded the set at 25-16.
The third set mirrored the start of the first as WIU faced an early deficit. However, consistent performance from Black and Kennedy Bauer, alongside service aces from Kremer, propelled them forward. They extended their lead through mid-set rallies and ultimately claimed victory in the third set with a score of 25-18.
