The Leathernecks faced a challenging match against Illinois State, resulting in a 4-1 defeat. The game, held in Normal, Illinois, saw Haley Glover score all four goals for the Redbirds. Kelsi McThenia managed to score the only goal for the Leathernecks with a header in the 49th minute, assisted by Rita Moran.
Illinois State quickly took control of the game with Glover scoring twice by the 12th minute and completing her hat trick in the 27th minute. A turning point occurred when a Redbird player was sent off in the 33rd minute due to a hair-pulling incident. Despite this advantage and several opportunities, Western could not score during the first half and entered halftime trailing 3-0.
In the second half, McThenia's goal gave some hope to Western Illinois University (WIU), but Illinois State's defense remained firm. The Redbirds secured their victory with a fourth goal in the 70th minute.
A significant factor contributing to WIU's defensive struggles was the absence of Isabel Navas Rodriguez, a two-time OVC Goalkeeper of the Week. Avery Weaver from McFarland, Wisconsin stepped in as goalkeeper for this match.
The Leathernecks now have a ten-day break before they face SEMO Redhawks to begin OVC play.
