Western Illinois University faced Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) in a pivotal Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) match on Sunday in Edwardsville, Illinois. The Leathernecks needed a top-eight finish to secure a spot in the OVC tournament but entered the game ranked ninth.

The match began with SIUE nearly scoring within five minutes when their shot hit the crossbar. Western's Alanna Pennington and Malerie Rohweder attempted long-range shots, both of which were saved by SIUE's defense.

The first half saw SIUE take control late, scoring two quick goals within 27 seconds to establish a 2-0 lead before halftime. Early in the second half, the Cougars extended their lead to 4-0. Prior to this game, Western had conceded only three goals throughout the conference season. SIUE maintained possession in Western's defensive third for much of the second half.

With 15 minutes remaining, Western earned a penalty that Sachiko Gamo converted, offering some hope for her team. In the final minute of play, Gamo scored again from another penalty opportunity, bringing her tally to two goals for the match—a season-high performance for the junior from Otsu, Japan. Gamo now leads her team with three goals this season.

Western is set to conclude its regular season next week with an away game against Little Rock on Thursday and a home fixture against Lindenwood on Sunday, October 22.
