WIU Women's Track & Field triumphs at Cougar Alumni Open

The WIU Women's Track & Field team secured a first-place finish at the Cougar Alumni Open on Friday night, achieving a total of 136 points. Ashley Thomas led the team with notable performances in both the long jump and triple jump events. She set personal records with a long jump of 5.74 meters and a triple jump of 11.35 meters. Her long jump performance is tied for the fifth-best in program history.

Kelsey Hutchins finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 11.12 meters, contributing to a combined total of 28 points in field events alongside Thomas. Emma Ponx set a new program record in the pole vault, clearing 3.89 meters. Other contributors included Dana Surwillo, Colleen Johnson, and Angel Stanley, who placed second through fourth in the pole vault event.

In running events, Greta Sieren and Krissy Petrou finished first and second respectively in the 800 meters, while Jolena Site achieved a personal record by winning the 400 meters with a time of 58.35 seconds. Bria Armstrong secured second place in the 60-meter hurdles, and Lydia Bennet completed her race with a fifth-place finish in the mile run.

The men's team finished fourth overall with 90 points. Lucas Burmeister earned second place in the 200 meters, while Sean Hudspath also took second place in the 800 meters event. In the mile run, Richard Brown won with Robert Perry finishing third and Eason Comer placing fourth.

Rayvon Wright excelled across multiple field events, placing second in the triple jump, third in high jump, and fifth in long jump. Toriano Tate also competed well in the triple jump event while Garrison Murray secured second place in high jump.

The Leathernecks will next compete at the Fighting Illini Open on January 11th.
