The Illinois Senate has taken steps to honor astronaut James Lovell by designating December 21, 2024, as "Captain James A. Lovell Day." This initiative was led by State Senator Julie Morrison, with support from State Senator Steve McClure.
"I can’t think of anyone more deserving of the honor. His leadership on Apollo 13 will never be forgotten, nor will his service aboard Apollo 8," said Senator McClure. "Captain Lovell is an American hero, and all Illinoisians are proud that he chooses to call our great state home."
Senator Morrison added, "James A. Lovell’s extraordinary courage and skills have left an indelible mark on human space exploration. His achievements have long inspired generations to dream big and persevere in the face of seemingly impossible challenges."
Lovell's career began as a pilot in the U.S. Navy before joining NASA in 1962. He participated in several historic missions, including Gemini 12 and Apollo 8, where he became one of the first humans to orbit the moon.
He is also known for commanding the Apollo 13 mission, which was dramatized in the film "Apollo 13," with Tom Hanks portraying him.
Senate Resolution 1280 officially declares December 21 as Captain James A. Lovell Day in Illinois.
