Western Illinois women’s basketball ends losing streak against Clarke University

Western Illinois University's women's basketball team ended a four-game losing streak with a decisive 97-58 victory over Clarke University at Western Hall. The Leathernecks controlled the game from the start, demonstrating their depth and defensive skills to secure their sixth win of the season.

The first quarter saw WIU trailing by one point, 25-24. However, they improved defensively in the second quarter, limiting Clarke to just 11 points. The Leathernecks forced 12 turnovers throughout the game, converting them into 18 points.

By halftime, WIU had increased their lead to 46-36, thanks to strong bench contributions and fast-break opportunities. Sophomore guard Raegan McCowan led all scorers with a double-double, finishing with 25 points and 10 rebounds. She shot efficiently from the floor, going 11-for-13.

Mia Nicastro also performed well, scoring 19 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Her effectiveness around the rim helped extend possessions for WIU.

The Leathernecks' reserves contributed significantly with 36 points. Freshman guard Shelby Bowman was particularly effective from beyond the arc, hitting four three-pointers for a total of 12 points. Maria Messling and Jasmine Nichols combined for an additional 17 points and ten rebounds.

WIU dominated in transition with 19 fast-break points and scored an impressive 64 points in the paint. They limited Clarke to just 36% shooting from the floor while out-rebounding them by a margin of 50-27.

Next up for WIU is a trip to Edwardsville to face SIUE on Thursday at 5 p.m.
