A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Scott County Sheriff's Office in Illinois on January 29, 2025. The request, issued by the West Central Reporter, a media organization committed to comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, sought specific records pertaining to immigration detainers.
The documents requested include any records showing persons committed to county jails in Scott County who have had an Immigration Detainer issued against them by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency since January 29, 2024.
As journalists at West Central Reporter, we believe that access to public records is essential for fulfilling our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. In light of our role in disseminating information, we have requested a fee waiver as media professionals.
We are currently awaiting a response from the Scott County Sheriff's Office regarding this request.
