Western Illinois Men's Basketball faced a challenging game against SIUE, ultimately losing 69-65 at Western Hall. Despite their efforts, the Leathernecks (8-15, 2-10 OVC) could not overcome SIUE's balanced performance. Marko Maletic was the standout player for WIU with 24 points and five three-pointers. Trey Deveaux added 13 points and eight rebounds, while Julius Rollins and Massal Diouf contributed with 11 points each.
WIU had an advantage in rebounding, outpacing SIUE 42-38 and scoring 17 second-chance points. However, they struggled with shooting efficiency, achieving only a 37.5% field goal percentage and committing nine turnovers. Their performance from beyond the arc also faltered as they made six of their 20 attempts.
SIUE (15-8, 8-4 OVC) led by eight points at halftime with a score of 37-29. Although WIU fought back in the second half, outscoring SIUE by four points, it wasn't enough to secure a win. Maletic's scoring kept WIU competitive until the end, but SIUE maintained their lead through crucial free throws.
Looking ahead, the Leathernecks will aim to improve as they prepare for upcoming games against Tennessee State and UT Martin next week.
