Western Illinois splits day at Dome Tournament with win over Butler

Western Illinois University participated in The Dome Tournament on February 9, 2025, in Rosemont, Illinois. The team managed to split their doubleheader games, securing a win against Butler before falling to DePaul.

In the opening game against Butler, Western Illinois achieved a narrow 5-4 victory. Their performance was marked by strong offense and crucial pitching moments. The Leathernecks took control with three runs in the fifth inning, aided by timely hits and errors from Butler's defense. Although Butler scored once more in the sixth inning, Western Illinois maintained their lead to secure the win. Despite allowing 12 hits from Butler, Western Illinois' pitchers successfully stranded 10 runners on base. Payton Brown's home run in the bottom of the seventh inning was pivotal for the team's success.

The second game saw Western Illinois face off against DePaul in a close contest that extended into extra innings. The Leathernecks were limited to five hits and managed to score only in the fourth and eighth innings. DePaul ultimately secured a 3-2 victory with a decisive play in the bottom of the eighth inning. Western Illinois' pitchers delivered a commendable performance over 7.2 innings, conceding eight hits but only one earned run.

Following these matches, Western Illinois holds a season record of 2-2 as they prepare for upcoming games.
