Western Illinois University began their softball season with mixed results at The Dome in Rosemont, Illinois, on February 8, 2025. The team split their opening day games, securing a victory against Detroit Mercy but falling to Green Bay.

In the morning game against Detroit Mercy, Western Illinois took an early lead and eventually won 8-6. Payton Brown was a standout performer, going 3-for-4 with a double and a stolen base. Maria Luna also made significant contributions with a triple that drove in three runs. Kaitlyn Green closed out the seventh inning to earn the save.

The afternoon matchup saw Western Illinois face off against Green Bay. Despite efforts from Malia Robertson and Ruby Tarr, who reached base multiple times and contributed offensively, WIU lost 5-3. A three-run seventh inning by Green Bay proved decisive in the contest.

With an even record of 1-1 after their opening games, Western Illinois aims to build on their performance as they continue in tournament play.
