Western Illinois University (WIU) Athletics commemorated Black History Month throughout February by celebrating the contributions of its Black alumni, Hall of Famers, current student-athletes, and coaches. The university highlighted individuals who have made significant impacts in their respective sports and beyond.

Jennifer Alexander, a former volleyball player at WIU from 2001 to 2006, was honored for her achievements on the court. She was recognized as a member of the All-Freshman team and named Freshman of the Year in 2003. Her career includes being named First-Team All-Conference twice and Second-Team All-Conference twice. Alexander also earned Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2005 and was inducted into the Western Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame in 2024.

Frisman Jackson, who played football at WIU from 2000 to 2001, is celebrated as an all-time leader in career yards per catch. He received multiple accolades during his college career and went on to play professionally with the Cleveland Browns before starting a coaching career that led him to become a wide receiver coach for the Seattle Seahawks.

Monzel Jackson's legacy as a basketball player from 1950 to 1952 includes holding records for rebounds at WIU. His contributions earned him MVP titles during his sophomore and junior years before he joined the Harlem Globetrotters.

Justin Fitzpatrick excelled in both football and baseball at WIU, earning conference honors and academic recognition. After graduation, he pursued a career in creative content direction at West Virginia University and Miami University.

Current student-athletes like Edward Clark III have also been acknowledged for their achievements. Clark III has set personal records in track events such as the Men's 60-meter dash this season.

Assistant coach Olivia Travis reflected on Black History Month: "Black History Month is a time to honor the strengths and achievements of those who came before us and reminds us to keep pushing forward to inspire the next generation."

Student-athletes Denver Johnson and Richardlyne Francois were noted for their success on the women's tennis team, with Francois expressing that Black History Month is "a chance to reflect on powerful contributions."

Chris Hill's journey from being an athlete at Milwaukee University to coaching men's basketball at WIU exemplifies dedication within athletics across various levels.

The celebration served not only as recognition but also as inspiration for future generations within Leatherneck Athletics.
