Western Illinois University's baseball team secured its first victory of the season with a decisive 12-1 win over Alabama State at Wheeler-Watkins Stadium. The Leathernecks, who now hold a 1-5 record, broke away from a quiet start with a strong offensive display in the later innings.
The team's scoring began in the second inning when Matt Olive's sacrifice fly brought Tyler Large home. Western Illinois added two more runs in the third inning through Liam Bushey's single and a double play that scored Krayton Morse. However, it was in the seventh and eighth innings that WIU truly asserted dominance, adding three runs followed by an impressive six-run inning to secure their lead.
Tyler Large played a significant role in the victory, achieving three hits out of four attempts, including a double and two triples, alongside two RBIs. Krayton Morse also contributed notably at the top of the lineup with three hits and three runs scored. Matt Olive recorded one hit and two RBIs while both Liam Bushey and Kenneth Perez delivered multi-hit performances.
On the mound, junior right-hander Max Tripure had a solid outing, pitching 6.2 innings with only one run allowed on five hits. He also struck out three batters and walked two to earn the win. Relievers Jackson Rodgers and Alex Esker combined for 1.1 scoreless innings to conclude the game effectively.
Following this dominant performance, WIU aims to carry forward their momentum into their next game against Alabama State scheduled for Saturday night at 6 p.m.
