Western Illinois University's softball team faced a challenging home opener against Saint Louis, resulting in an 8-5 defeat at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium. The Leathernecks initially took control with a strong start, scoring four runs in the first inning due to early pitching difficulties from Saint Louis. Ruby Tarr's two-run single and RBI singles from Payton Brown and Lillie Wools contributed to the early lead.

However, after their initial success, Western Illinois struggled offensively for the remainder of the game, managing only one hit against Saint Louis' bullpen. In response, Saint Louis scored four runs in the third inning and added three more in the sixth. Despite efforts to rally in the seventh inning with walks by Maria Luna and Ruby Tarr followed by Lillie Wools' RBI single, WIU's comeback attempt ended when Beth Pavy fouled out.

The Leathernecks used three pitchers during the game. Audrey Clark started but allowed four runs in her three innings. Libby Spaulding relieved her, giving up three runs (two earned) over 2.1 innings while striking out one batter. Lillie Wools pitched 1.2 innings, striking out two batters to limit further damage.

Despite this setback, Western Illinois demonstrated potential through aggressive baserunning and effective use of early scoring opportunities. The team is set to play a three-game series at home against SEMO this weekend.
