Western Illinois University faced a challenging game against Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO), ending their weekend series with a 9-3 loss. The match, held at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium, saw the Leathernecks begin strong by scoring in the first inning. However, SEMO's six-run surge in the third inning set them ahead decisively.
Payton Brown was a standout for Western Illinois, achieving two hits out of four attempts, including a home run and two RBIs. Kaylee Ketcherside contributed significantly with a double and two runs scored, while Maria Luna added two hits and an RBI. Despite recording eight hits, Western Illinois struggled to capitalize on opportunities, leaving seven runners stranded.
Pitcher Lillie Wools took the loss for WIU, allowing eight runs—five earned—over three innings from nine hits. Kaitlyn Green provided effective relief pitching for Western Illinois, holding SEMO to one hit over two scoreless innings; however, the offensive rally needed against SEMO's pitchers did not materialize.
SEMO took an early lead with two runs in the first inning and solidified their advantage during the third inning. Brooklyn Saysoff led this charge with three RBIs. SEMO accumulated 11 hits throughout the game and demonstrated aggressive base running with two stolen bases. Pitcher Elliott Stinson secured the win by delivering four shutout innings in relief.
Defensive errors plagued WIU as they committed three mistakes that offered SEMO additional scoring opportunities. Despite strong performances from Brown and Luna offensively, WIU could not keep pace with SEMO's explosive offense.
As they look forward to their next game against Bradley University on March 18th at 2 p.m., Western Illinois aims to enhance their defensive strategies and maintain consistency at bat.
