Western Illinois University’s softball team split a doubleheader against Lindenwood University at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Missouri, on Saturday, April 12. In the first game, Western Illinois faced a narrow loss, falling 8-6 after attempting a late rally with five runs in the seventh inning. Although they outhit Lindenwood 11-6, Western Illinois struggled to capitalize on early chances to score. Key performances included Sophia Sanchez with three hits and two RBIs, and Maria Luna with a two-run single. Audrey Clark, who started as pitcher, took the loss, allowing six runs over 3.2 innings.
In the second game, the Western Illinois team rebounded with an 8-3 victory. The team gathered 12 hits and utilized timely hitting to secure the win. Notable contributions came from Ruby Tarr and RyLee German, who both had multi-hit games, and Luna, who added three RBIs. Lillie Wools pitched a complete game, giving up three runs on 10 hits and striking out one across 128 pitches. Wools also excelled at the plate, achieving two hits and driving in three runs.
Top hitters Payton Brown and Sanchez effectively set the stage for the team, combining for three hits and three runs. Western Illinois scored in four different innings, with a two-run fifth and a two-run seventh inning icing the game. Their defense held strong, recording no errors during Game 2.
The win lifted Western Illinois’ overall record to 10-27 and 6-11 in Ohio Valley Conference play. The team will aim to continue building momentum as they proceed with their road series, facing Lindenwood again on April 13.
