The Western Illinois tennis team concluded its final home game of the season by defeating Tennessee State decisively. Senior Paige Grice delivered a strong performance, achieving her 31st win of the season and ending her career with the Leathernecks on a high note.
In doubles, the team swept all three matches to secure the opening point. At No. 1, the pair of Nour Gueblaoui and Richardlyne Francois won 6-4. Grice teamed up with Mana Fawcett at No. 2 and demonstrated solid synergy to win 6-1. At No. 3, Chloé Routier and Lara Souza emerged victorious in a tight 7-6 (11-9) match.
Singles play continued the team's success. Francois faced challenges at No. 1 but managed a comeback after dropping a second set 0-6 and being down 1-4 in the third, eventually winning 6-4. Routier secured a quick win at No. 2 with consecutive 6-0 sets. Grice achieved a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3, marking her 17th singles victory and extending WIU's lead to 4-0.
At No. 5, Souza showed perseverance by overcoming an initial 5-7 set loss, winning the next sets 7-6 and 11-9. Gueblaoui performed well at No. 4, with a 6-2, 7-5 win. Fawcett completed the team's 7-0 sweep with a calm 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 6.
Post win, Western Illinois is set to participate in the OVC Tennis Championship Tournament in St. Louis on Thursday, April 17.
