Western Illinois University's softball team lost to Lindenwood 4-2 at the Lou Brock Sports Complex on Sunday. Despite a strong start in pitching and several scoring chances, the Leathernecks couldn't secure a victory.
The game began promisingly for Western Illinois when catcher RyLee German advanced on a single and later scored thanks to a sacrifice fly from Rylee Boone in the second inning. However, the Leathernecks managed only five hits, with Maria Luna contributing an RBI single in the sixth inning that brought the score to 4-2 in Lindenwood's favor.
Kaylee Ketcherside added to Western Illinois' offense with her sixth double of the season, as Sophia Sanchez and Ruby Tarr added a hit each. Despite several players reaching base, including Tarr and Lillie Wools who were hit by pitches in the sixth inning, the Leathernecks couldn't capitalize further on their opportunities.
Libby Spaulding started strong for Western Illinois as the pitcher's circle, allowing one run on two hits over two innings. Audrey Clark followed, but experienced command issues, walking three batters in just one-third of an inning. Lillie Wools eventually took the loss after giving up three runs over 3.2 innings, though she was able to force nine groundouts.
The Leathernecks displayed commendable defense, with only a single error by Luna. Alivia Beard contributed as a pinch runner, and German was effective behind the plate, catching a potential base stealer.
Lindenwood secured their win with a decisive three-run fourth inning, featuring a home run by Tori Hatton and an RBI triple by Jolie McMinn. Their bullpen kept Western Illinois scoreless in the final frame, with Ryleigh Owens earning a save.
Western Illinois aims to end a brief losing streak and regain momentum as they prepare to host the University of Missouri-Kansas City at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium on Wednesday, April 16, at 2 p.m.
