State Representative C.D. Davidsmeyer of Murrayville successfully advanced legislation aimed at preventing school gun violence through the Illinois House of Representatives with unanimous support. Representative Davidsmeyer introduced the bill following a local incident where a student had threatened violence against another student, which went unreported to the principal due to its nature as a mere threat.

House Bill 1316 necessitates that every school official report any threat of gun violence occurring on school property to the principal's office immediately. If such threats arise, principals are instructed to inform the parents of the student involved to ensure they do not have access to firearms.

“I don’t want to take any threats of violence lightly,” Rep. Davidsmeyer stated. “My legislation will help prevent school gun violence while not impeding on the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners. If we can help to ensure these horrific incidents no longer happen, our gun rights will not be under constant attack by anti-gun politicians.”

The bill was passed by the Illinois House on April 9, with a vote tally of 115-0-0. It will now be sponsored in the Senate by State Senator Jil Tracy from Quincy.
