The WIU tennis team has progressed to the semifinals after a decisive 4-0 victory over the University of Southern Indiana in the opening round of the tournament.
In the doubles matches, Nour Gueblaoui and Richardlyne Francois secured a 7-5 win at No. 1. Paige Grice and Mana Fawcett followed with a 6-4 victory at No. 2. The pair of Chloé Routier and Lara Souza completed the doubles sweep with a 6-3 win at No. 3, giving Western Illinois the opening point.
The momentum carried into singles play. Fawcett at No. 6 won 6-0, 6-0. At No. 5, Gueblaoui won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Souza secured the victory at No. 4 with a 6-2, 6-4 finish, clinching the 4-0 team win.
Play was stopped for the remaining matches as the team had secured the win. Francois, at No. 1, was leading 6-3, 0-2; Routier, at No. 2, had lost the first set 6-4 and was trailing 0-1 in the second; and Grice, at No. 3, was narrowly edged out 7-5 in the first set and was leading 1-0 in the second.
The Leathernecks will face the Bryant University Bulldogs on April 18 in the semifinals, continuing their postseason journey.
