Prairie State Taxes: Hancock County residents rank 90th in total sales taxes paid for 2023

Hancock County taxpayers ranked 90th in total sales taxes paid per county in 2023, according to Illinois tax records.

In total, residents paid $772,252 in sales taxes during 2023.

The county ranked 89th in the Prairie State the year before, with $773,598 spent in sales taxes.

The largest share of sales taxes paid by Hancock County residents in 2023 came from the County Sales Tax.

The County Sales Tax is a local sales tax imposed on retail sales of goods and services within a specific county. It is one of the primary sources of revenue for county governments, funding a wide range of essential services, including education, infrastructure, public safety, public health, and social services. The average rate imposed in Illinois is around 8.2%.

As of 2021, Illinois was the highest taxed state in the US. A study from Wallet Hub found Illinois taxes were 39.83% higher than the national average.

Illinois governor J. B. Pritzker is accused of adding more than $5.2 billion in new or higher taxes since coming into power in early 2019. As a business owner, he has a fortune of more than $3 billion, largely based on his family's wealth and connections.
