Illinois House Republicans voiced strong opposition to new tax initiatives proposed by progressive groups, which would amount to a $6 billion increase. During a news conference at the Capitol, Republican leaders Norine Hammond, C.D. Davidsmeyer, and Amy Elik criticized these proposals. The representatives labeled the planned tax hikes as "outrageous and unacceptable."

This backlash from Republicans comes amid intensified efforts by progressive Democrats advocating for a graduated income tax hike. The Illinois Revenue Alliance put forward a collection of tax increases aimed at generating the $6 billion.

According to Rep. Hammond, who serves as the Chief Budgeteer for the House Republican Caucus, these taxing plans are linked to funding "taxpayer-funded healthcare benefits for illegal immigrants, more pork projects for Democrats, and a wish list of wasteful spending programs." Hammond highlighted the proposed reduction in the Estate Tax exemption as particularly concerning, underscoring her belief that family farmers would be unduly burdened.

Amy Elik, holding the role of Deputy Budgeteer, raised questions about the absence of state agency-proposed budget cuts. Instead, the focus appears to remain on introducing additional taxes. "The people of Illinois are tapped out. We cannot accept ANY tax increases," she stated, pointing to the financial struggles faced by seniors and young families in the state.

As Republicans denounce tax increases, attention has also turned to Governor JB Pritzker's recent national conduct, particularly his speeches that some perceive as inflammatory. Speaking at a California event, Pritzker made remarks such as “Bullies respond to one thing, and one thing only, a punch in the face.” He continued this assertive discourse at a New Hampshire Democratic Party fundraiser, where he urged for mobilization and stated, “These Republicans cannot know a moment of peace.”

State Rep. C.D. Davidsmeyer criticized Pritzker for these statements. "Governor Pritzker, your comments are appalling. You should apologize to all Republicans for encouraging harassment and disruption as you focus on your White House aspirations," said Davidsmeyer. He added that the Governor should prioritize collaborative efforts on the state budget rather than pursuing national ambitions.

The press conference offered a forum for Illinois House Republicans to articulate their perspective on the proposed taxation and the broader political climate.
