Western Illinois University's baseball team faced defeat in both games of a doubleheader against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) on Sunday. The Leathernecks lost the first game 11-2 and the second 8-3. The first game began from where it was halted due to rain on Saturday.
Brock Lummus initiated the scoring for Western Illinois in the opening game with a home run in the third inning. However, SIUE responded with six consecutive runs, leading 6-1 by the fifth inning. Lummus managed a single in the fifth inning and scored on a hit by Liam Bushey, making it 6-2. SIUE extended its lead in the subsequent innings, resulting in an 11-2 victory. Lummus performed well, going 2-4 with a run batted in, while Kyree Alexander was also notable with a 2-3 performance.
The second game saw Jason Buhl start for the Leathernecks, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing two runs while striking out six. Liam Bushey hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning to give the Leathernecks a temporary 3-0 lead. However, SIUE rallied with a five-run fifth inning and scored three more in the sixth, securing an 8-3 win. Hits were recorded by Bushey, Krayton Morse, Kenneth Perez, and Wandel Campana in the second game.
