McDonough County Board Law & Legal Committee met June 2.

Here are the minutes provided by the committee:

The Law & Legal Committee held its monthly meeting on Monday, June 2, 2025 at 7:00 p.m. The meeting was held at the McDonough County Courthouse, 3rd Floor, Law Library. Committee Members present included Committee Chair Joe Erlandson, Vice Chair Ken Durkin, Clayton Cook, Travis Hiel, Ryan Litchfield, Terra Litchfield, Jack Lowderman, and Terry Thompson. Other persons in attendance were Dave Schaab, Ric Smart, Deborah Cousins, Sheriff Nick Petitgout, County Chair Eric Blakeley, and County Clerk Jeremy Benson.

Chair Erlandson called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

Review & Approve May 5, 2025 Minutes

Member Durkin moved with a second by Member Cook to approve the minutes as submitted. Motion carried on a voice vote.

Waste Management Update

Dave Schaab gave the report. Dave will be retiring at the end of June 2025.

Tri-County Recycling

No report.

Veteran’s Assistance and Van Report

Ric Smart gave the report. Nine Veterans were given assistance in May. Total assistance amounted to $2,239.00.

Sheriff’s Report

Sheriff Nick Petitgout gave the report.

Assessor’s Office Update

Assessor Deborah Cousins gave the report. On track for assessments, busy with calls since tax bills went out. Farmland Committee met 6/2/2025. Discussed ariel maps being from 2020, Deborah has reached out to WIU-GIS to inquire on new maps.

Claims Review and Approval

Member R. Litchfield moved with a second by Member Hiel to approve the claims as submitted. Motion carried on a voice vote.

Other Items as Needed

Chair Erlandson provided updates on co2. Iowa passed a law that no public domain be used. Illinois has a bill awaiting signature for no co2 sequestration in the Mahomet Aquafer. Member Cook updated the committee on wind turbine fire.

County Board Chair Comments

Rick Walker is taking over as part time highway engineer starting 6/2/2025 through the end of 2025. Provided building project updates.

Adjourn

Member Thompson moved with a second by Member T. Litchfield to adjourn the meeting at 7:44 p.m. Motion carried on a voice vote.
