Western Illinois University began its 2025 football season with a 52–3 loss to the University of Illinois, ranked twelfth nationally, at Memorial Stadium in Champaign. The Leathernecks were unable to generate much offense, finishing with 163 total yards. Quarterback Chris Irvin completed 14 of 29 passes for 134 yards. Demari Davis led the receivers with four catches for 65 yards and had a touchdown called back, being marked down at the one-yard line after a 36-yard reception. The running game was limited to just 29 yards on 26 attempts against Illinois' defensive front.

On defense, Western Illinois faced challenges from a balanced Illini attack but managed to register some key plays. Jalen Nicolas and David Dunston each recorded sacks, while Payne Miller and Kevin Washington Jr. combined for another sack. Keith Moko led the team in tackles with nine, and Buju Aumua-Tuisavura along with Malini Ti'a added seven tackles each. Special teams contributed with DJ Taylor blocking a 28-yard field goal attempt.

The team's only points came early in the fourth quarter from a 20-yard field goal by Antonio Chadha. A false start penalty stalled what could have been a touchdown drive when the Leathernecks had first and goal at the one-yard line.

Western Illinois (0–1) will continue its non-conference schedule next weekend with an away game at Northwestern.
